Re: Top Shakedown Openers? |
I think out of all the Shakedowns 6/30/85 is the most epic.
There are many others out there that are great, but there's something special going on with this one.
I'm not even that big a fan of the rest of the show, but they nailed that Shakedown.

Re: Top Shakedown Openers? |
I must be missing it. What is so special about this one?
I can't stand Bobby's background vocals on it. Jerry flubs a lot of the words. I'd take the 4/26/83 Philly over it any day.

The build-up in the jam is what so special about it, Red. More often then not, the jam simply ends when Garcia had enough, here there is a climax to the jam.

Re: Top Shakedown Openers? |
This one (of quite a many actually) I'll take Jerry's lyrical flubs out of the mix for the outstanding jam.
I also think 9/18/87 gets a mention here for some titanic playing from Jerry and the rest of the band, but then it kind of unravels at the end.
http://www.archive.org/details/gd87-09-18.sbd.samaritano.20025.sbeok.shnfListening to 4/26/83 now...
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1983-04-26.sbd.miller.97544.sbeok.flac16So far I'm noting the break-neck pace, Brent's synth is all over the place, and the very shrill mix... where's Phil dammit? no bottom end.
Jerry flubs the lyrics in many a Shakedown and I believe 4/26 can be included in that list.
Starting to get better around 7 mins in though...
I'd still take 6/30 after listen to the 4/26 recommendation. All little to frantic for my tastes.
